What is G.Y.A.H.P?
The Greater Yellowstone American History Project is the result of several western Wyoming school districts applying for and receiving a federal grant called, Teaching American History. This is actually the fourth grant to be awarded in Wyoming. Two have gone to Natrona County School District and this is our second as well. The idea and legislation behind the grant comes from West Virginia Senator, Robert Byrd. He felt American History classes were losing ground in our schools and he wanted to change that path. Since 2001 there have been around 700 grants awarded and 600 billion dollars allocated. Our grant is for up to five years and $800,000.

GYAHP is a way to provide applicable experiences for teachers to use within the classroom regardless of grade level. The lectures and hands-on curriculum allow teachers to understand History by doing. Teachers apply what has been learned and impart it upon students through meaningful, engaging and authentic teaching activities.

The GYAHP is a project that allows US History teachers of all ages to learn and work together to better educate their classroom students. As a secondary teacher I have found that I can learn from Elementary teachers and their experiences as much as I can from other High School teachers. The subject matter that is introduced is always helpful for adding to my classroom for unique ways to educate students. That is was the GYAHP means for me and the help that it has given me as an educator for SCSD#1
